Did you know that G, E, & C are the notes of the NBC chime? The reason NBC uses the chime may not be well known to most people. The original use of the chime was for station identification in the 1920s, long before automation in the 1970s. A sort of tv traffic signal if you will, to switch between stations and pause for station identification. You may still here these today while listening to sports on the radio in the form of a radio announcer.

The first use of the distinctive NBC notes were thought to come from WSB in Atlanta, who used them for their on purpose. They were heard by someone at NBC while watching a networked broadcast of a Georgia Tech football game and asked permission to use them as their own. Three months later in 1931, the chimes began as they are today, G, E, C (G3, E4, C4 for you musicians out there).

Last week stars gathered in Los Angeles to shed some fresh light on the 75 year old stable. Those stars include:

Jenna Fischer of the Office

Masi Oka of Heroes

EW.com had an exclusive peak at the recording process of these artists with one particularly intresting one from the Flaming Lips. Wayne Coyne managed to build an intresting double neck guitar featuring the iconic Guitar Hero neck.

So, I just got back from the Cardinals‘ show at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater on October 17, 2008. My friends and I sat in the front orchestra seats, pretty sweet, isle too! We got there two songs into the band’s set, about 9pm. We were late because we found out there was a Red Robin in Cumming, Ga and just had to eat there. Anyway, the band played some sweet songs, just check the set list.

1. Into The Light
2. Cobwebs
3. Peaceful Valley
4. Goodnight Rose
5. Bartering Lines
6. Everybody Knows
7. Wonderwall (Oasis) - w/ crazy guitar solo
8. Fix It
9. Off Broadway
10. Sun Also Sets
11. Come Pick Me Up
12. Grand Island (Neal Casal)
13. Shakedown on 9th Street

It may seem like a short set list. That’s because it was. Ryan apologized all show about his voice leaving him. Finally, after Shakedown on 9th Street, he apologized one last time and the band left the stage. I and everyone else there was caught off guard. Did they really just walk off stage? For good? I have only had one beer. Are we suppose to cheer and convince them to come back out? Well, we tried but the house lights went bright and the roadies started taking the stuff off stage. It was over. It was 10pm.

I am one in two for Cardinals‘ shows, this being a loss. I hope they come back to Atlanta healthy and with lots of energy to make it up to the city. If you missed out, here are some of my photos from the show. Enjoy.

P.S. I really dug the neon roses on stage.

Firefox 3.0 is my web browser of choice. Its great! It isn’t exactly what everyone wants in a browser though. That’s where add-ons come in! I have complied a list of my favorite Firefox 3.0 add-ons. So, check them out for yourself. I am sure you will use them as much as I do.

Weather, its important information everyone needs to know to start their day. So, have it inside your browser, at your finger-tips. Forcastfox™, available for Firefox 2.0 - 3.0, will sit in your browser’s toolbar showing you weather updates as they occur in your local area. Weather information is pulled from AccuWeather.com®. It features a customizable display with radar images, forecasts, and customizable icon sets. It has saved me from the weather quite a few times.

News, stay informed on today’s important topics of conversation. Brief is a light, slick looking RSS reader for Firefox 3.0. It allows you to search your feeds and features keyboard shortcuts, automatic background feed updates, and a slick UI. Brief has allows me to quickly and easily read through multiple web-site’s articles and continue on with my day.

Web Development, something most techies do at some point in their careers, whether its as a hobby or a profession. Web Developer, for Firefox 3.0, is one of the few add-ons that I can say will be priceless to you after you use it. It’s features span the areas of CSS, Javascript, cookies, forms, images, browser resizing, page validation, and much, much more! Not only is Web Developer available for Firefox 3.0, it also works with Flock and SeaMonkey. Try Web Developer it will save you time and headaches on your next web design project.

Ads, can’t live with them, can’t live without them… Actually, I would prefer not to see them, but isn’t that how most web-sites earn their income? We all grew tired of ignoring ads on web-sites many years ago. Recently, I discovered a Firefox 3.0 add-on that will allow you to just not display the adds at all, Adblock Plus! It works great at hiding ads while your browsing. It really makes a difference too. Try Adblock Plus for a few weeks and then try browsing on a friends computer without Adblock Plus, its horrible!

Finally, one last add-on to Firefox that I find useful. Tree Style Tab, your tabs in a column on the left. Not only does it save space, but it also allows parent and child ordering and collapsing of the tabs! Try opening more than 10 tabs and tell me you like the way Firefox handles tabs!

The Moog Guitar puts revolutionary new technology in the hands of the guitarist. Moog Music is known for building the finest instruments and the Moog Guitar is first and foremost a very fine guitar; designed to be played by the best musicians as their primary axe. Its AAAAA maple top, swamp ash body and ebony finger board bespeak the quality that musicians have come to expect from a Moog instrument.

The addition of Moog Guitar Electronics opens guitarists to a whole new musical vocabulary: Not a guitar synthesizer, not a MIDI guitar or an effects processor; players are intimately connected to The Moog Guitar because it works its magic on the strings themselves.

What makes this guitar so special?

FULL SUSTAIN MODE - like no other sustainer; infinite sustain on every string, at every fret position and at any volume. You may have heard sustain before but not with this power (we call it ?Vo Power?) and clarity.

CONTROLLED SUSTAIN MODE - allows you to play sustained single or polyphonic lines without muting technique. The Moog Guitar sustains the notes you are playing while actively muting the strings you are not playing.

MUTE MODE - removes energy from the strings, resulting in a variety of staccato articulations. The mute mode has never been heard on any other guitar; the Vo Power stops the strings with the same intensity that it sustains them. You feel the instrument transform in your hands.

-via Moog

What sets the Moog Guitar apart from sustainer guitars?

-The first and most basic difference is that the Moog Guitar is able to
MUTE the strings, actually physically stopping the strings’ vibration.

-The Moog Guitar in the FULL SUSTAIN mode is more powerful and responsive than anything on the market. The Moog Guitar also has governors on every string that prevent excessive buzzing. It is a very strong and even sustain on every string, on every fret. The Moog Guitar can sustain full six-note chords easily.

-When in any mode (Full Sustain, Controlled Sustain, or Mute) you do not have to sacrifice one of the pick-ups for the functionality of the innovations. This means there’s always sound coming from both pick-ups. The ability to pan mute and sustain control between pick-ups (with the included foot pedal) is the source of Harmonic Blending.

-You’re always in control of the Moog Guitar. When Controlled Sustain is engaged, you pick and choose what strings are being given energy (by playing them!), without having to mute the other strings with your hands. There is no spill-over of energy to unwanted strings.

As you can see in the video above, the Moog guitar has the full endorsement of Lou Reed and Vernon Reid from Living Colour, which in and of itself is enough to justify the $6,495 asking price. However, you will have to wait until September to get your hands on one—but pre-orders are being accepted on the product page right now.

Bonus: This certainly brings back fond memories of Nigel Tufnel’s guitar collection tour doesn’t it?

Personally, I have been using the multi-purpose application for a day now. It has really simplified my daily life. I use to use TerraIM for AIM and a Gmail plugin for firefox to automate my email and of course manually login to facebook and myspace. Now, with Digsby, I no longer have to keep my browser open to see if I have new mail or login to myspace or facebook to check for new comments. Digsby does it all!

What is even better is that the whole thing is portable. I can use it on another computer. All my preferences are stored server side. So, when I login, its all there just like on my other computer! The only con is that Digsby doesn’t have random instant message colors, which everyone knows I love. I suppose you cannot have it all. Hats off to you over at Digsby.
